The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has intensified its enforcement operations against illegal IMEI tampering and the sale of cloned mobile devices, following a major raid in Gilgit.
According to PTA’s official statement, the Zonal Office Gilgit conducted the operation in close coordination with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Gilgit.
The targeted raid took place at a mobile repair shop located in front of Bus Stand Jutial, Gilgit. During the operation, authorities confiscated several laptops and USB devices reportedly used for unlawful device modification. One individual was arrested on-site and handed over to NCCIA officials for further investigation and legal proceedings.
PTA Enforces Zero-Tolerance Policy
PTA reiterated its strict zero-tolerance stance on IMEI tampering and the illegal modification of device identifiers. The authority emphasized that altering IMEI numbers and distributing cloned or patched devices pose significant risks to national security and public safety.
These unlawful practices enable criminal anonymity, making it easier to commit various offenses such as cybercrime, identity theft, financial fraud, and even abductions. PTA warned that such activities undermine the integrity of Pakistan’s mobile communication ecosystem and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Serious Threats to National Security
The distribution of cloned devices allows offenders to avoid detection during criminal activities. PTA highlighted that IMEI tampering remains one of the most frequently exploited methods for masking illegal communication, posing a direct threat to intelligence and law enforcement efforts.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
PTA has urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious activity involving device tampering or the sale of unauthorized mobile devices. The authority stressed that perpetrators will face strict legal action, including arrest and prosecution.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, PTA stated that it will continue working closely with cybercrime agencies and law enforcement bodies to protect the integrity of Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure and ensure a secure digital environment for all users.
