PTA, NCCIA Launch Crackdown on Illegal SIM Issuance in Karachi

Pakistan Telecom Authority

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), has intensified its enforcement efforts to curb the illegal issuance of SIM cards in Karachi.

The move highlights PTA’s ongoing commitment to protecting Pakistan’s digital ecosystem from unlawful practices and cyber-related risks.

According to an official statement issued on September 4, 2025, PTA’s Zonal Office in Karachi filed a complaint that prompted NCCIA to carry out a raid on a Zong franchise in Al Falah Society, Shah Faisal Colony.

The operation was successful, resulting in the seizure of multiple suspected devices linked to illegal SIM issuance. Authorities also confirmed the arrest of three individuals, including the franchise owner and franchise manager.

An FIR has been registered by NCCIA Karachi, and further investigations are currently underway to trace other networks and individuals possibly involved in these unlawful activities. Officials stated that more raids and enforcement drives are expected in the coming weeks as part of the joint crackdown.

Illegal SIM issuance has been a persistent challenge in Pakistan, often linked to fraudulent activities, scams, and even cybercrime. By working with NCCIA, PTA aims to close loopholes in the system and ensure that mobile connectivity services remain secure for legitimate users only.

This latest action reflects PTA’s strengthened focus on compliance and accountability within the telecom sector. The regulator emphasized that all telecom operators and franchises must strictly adhere to SIM registration protocols to avoid legal consequences.

The enforcement drive also reinforces PTA’s broader mission of safeguarding Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and promoting a safer online environment. Citizens are urged to report suspicious SIM-related activities to the authorities to assist in combating this growing problem.

The PTA reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward illegal SIM issuance and confirmed that it will continue collaborating with relevant agencies to eliminate such practices nationwide.
