Islamabad, August 30, 2025 – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced an important step to optimize the performance of its Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS).
In a recent development, PTA has offloaded old IMEI records of mobile devices, a move aimed at streamlining system operations and improving efficiency.
The initiative is expected to benefit both PTA and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) by ensuring more effective management of DIRBS. By reducing the load of historical data, the system will operate more smoothly, providing improved oversight and enhanced regulatory control over mobile device registrations.
According to PTA, this step will also encourage users to register their mobile phones by paying the applicable Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) customs duties and taxes. This will not only support compliance but also promote a more sustainable and transparent digital ecosystem in Pakistan. The move highlights PTA’s focus on creating a user-friendly and efficient mobile environment for consumers.
PTA further clarified that any unregistered mobile phone will remain functional on local networks for only 60 days. If the required FBR duties and taxes are not paid within this timeframe, the device will automatically be re-blocked under DIRBS regulations. This measure aims to curb the use of smuggled or unregistered devices in the country while ensuring proper revenue collection for the government.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a robust and transparent system that protects consumer rights and fosters a fair mobile marketplace. By optimizing DIRBS, PTA continues its mission of regulating mobile devices effectively while ensuring that legitimate users have a smooth and secure experience.
With this initiative, Pakistan takes another step toward strengthening its digital infrastructure, improving compliance, and supporting a sustainable mobile ecosystem.
