PTA Shares Key Tips to Identify Deepfake Videos

Pakistan Telecom Authority

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public awareness advisory explaining how users can identify deepfake videos, as the misuse of artificial intelligence continues to rise globally. Deepfakes, which use advanced AI to manipulate videos and images, are increasingly being used to spread misinformation, scams, and fake narratives online.

According to PTA, while deepfake content is becoming more sophisticated, there are still several visual and technical clues that can help users detect manipulated media. The authority emphasized that awareness is the first line of defense against such digital threats.

One of the primary indicators is unusual eye movement or unnatural blinking patterns. In many deepfake videos, facial expressions and eye behavior may appear inconsistent or robotic. Similarly, lip movements may not perfectly sync with the audio, making speech look slightly off or delayed.

PTA also highlighted that facial movements can appear unnatural or fail to align properly with the original person’s typical expressions. Distortions around the edges of the face, especially near the chin, cheeks, or hairline, can signal manipulation. Another common sign is inconsistent lighting or shadows, where the face may not match the surrounding environment in brightness or tone.

To further verify suspicious content, PTA recommends using digital verification tools. Platforms such as Microsoft Video Authenticator and Deepware Scanner can help analyze videos and detect signs of AI-generated alterations. These tools are designed to flag inconsistencies that may not be visible to the human eye.

The authority urged social media users to remain cautious before sharing any viral content, especially videos involving public figures or sensitive topics. Verifying the source and cross-checking information from reliable outlets can significantly reduce the spread of fake content.

As deepfake technology continues to evolve, PTA stressed the importance of digital literacy and responsible online behavior. By staying informed and vigilant, users can protect themselves and others from falling victim to misleading or harmful media.
