PTA to Block All SIMs Issued on Fake CNICs by August 16

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that all SIM cards issued on cancelled or fake Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) will be blocked by August 16, 2024.

This initiative is part of PTA’s broader effort to curb the misuse of mobile connections and ensure that all SIMs in circulation are registered under valid and legitimate identification.

Consumers who suspect that their SIMs might have been issued on a fake or cancelled CNIC have until August 16 to take corrective action. To maintain the functionality of their mobile connections, users are advised to verify the status of their CNICs through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). If a CNIC is found to be invalid, the consumer must obtain a new CNIC from NADRA to avoid service disruption.

To restore a blocked SIM, the consumer will need to visit their mobile operator’s sales center or authorized sales channel to complete the biometric verification process. This process involves verifying the user’s identity through fingerprint scanning, which is cross-checked with NADRA’s database to ensure that the SIM is registered under a valid CNIC.

The PTA emphasizes that this measure is critical for maintaining the integrity of the telecommunications network in Pakistan. By eliminating SIMs registered under fake identities, the PTA aims to reduce incidents of fraud, identity theft, and other criminal activities associated with unregistered or improperly registered SIM cards.

Mobile operators across the country have been instructed to cooperate fully with the PTA in this initiative. Consumers are urged to act promptly and follow the necessary steps to avoid any inconvenience.

As the deadline approaches, mobile users are reminded to take immediate action if they believe their SIMs may be at risk. This is a one-time opportunity to ensure that all mobile connections are properly registered and comply with the regulatory framework set forth by the PTA.

For further assistance, consumers can contact their respective mobile operators or visit the nearest sales center to complete the required processes before the August 16 deadline.
