The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has reiterated the importance of responsible social media usage, urging citizens to strictly comply with existing laws while engaging on digital platforms.

In an official press release issued from Islamabad on January 20, 2026, the regulator emphasized that ethical and lawful online behavior is a shared national responsibility.

According to the PTA, social media has become a powerful tool for communication and information sharing, but its misuse can have serious consequences for individuals and society.

The authority advised users to exercise caution and restraint when posting, sharing, or engaging with content online. Citizens were specifically warned against spreading or promoting illegal, hateful, defamatory, or false information, which can damage reputations and destabilize social harmony.

The PTA highlighted that the circulation of misleading or harmful content targeting state institutions, the judiciary, or private individuals undermines public trust and disrupts societal peace. Such actions, the regulator stressed, do not fall under freedom of expression and may lead to severe legal repercussions. The authority urged social media users to verify information before sharing it and to avoid engaging in campaigns that spread disinformation or incite hatred.

Referring to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016, the PTA reminded the public that unlawful online activities are punishable offenses under Pakistani law. These include cyber harassment, defamation, spreading fake news, and any form of digital content that threatens national security or public order. The regulator noted that legal action can be initiated against individuals found violating these provisions.

The PTA also called on digital platforms and stakeholders to play their role in ensuring a safer online environment. It stressed the need for collective efforts to promote responsible digital citizenship and uphold the rule of law in cyberspace. By fostering awareness and accountability, the authority believes that social media can be used positively to support constructive dialogue and national development.

In recent years, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in social media usage, making regulatory oversight and public awareness more critical than ever. The PTA reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring digital spaces and taking action against unlawful content in accordance with national laws.

The authority concluded by urging citizens to use social media responsibly, respect legal boundaries, and contribute to a secure, trustworthy, and harmonious digital ecosystem in Pakistan.
