The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has once again issued a strong warning to citizens against the sale, purchase, and use of foreign SIM cards within Pakistan, calling the practice illegal and punishable under existing laws.
The authority emphasized that engaging in such activities can lead to serious legal consequences, including fines and other penalties.
According to PTA, foreign SIMs are often misused for fraudulent activities, making them a significant threat to national security as well as to individuals’ personal and financial safety. Calls and messages made through unregistered or foreign SIM cards are difficult to trace, which creates opportunities for scams, identity theft, and financial fraud. As a result, users may unknowingly expose their sensitive information, including personal identification and banking details.
The telecom regulator stressed that the use of foreign SIMs is not only a violation of telecom regulations but can also drag unsuspecting users into legal complications. Many people purchase such SIMs believing they offer cheaper call rates or unrestricted access, but PTA clarified that these short-term benefits come with long-term risks.
To ensure safety and compliance with the law, PTA advised citizens to always purchase SIM cards from nearby franchises or officially registered outlets. It is essential that every SIM is registered under the user’s own name through the proper biometric verification process. This not only protects consumers from fraud but also helps authorities maintain a secure and transparent telecom system.
PTA further urged the public to report the sale or use of illegal foreign SIMs through its official complaint channels. The authority continues to run awareness campaigns to educate users about the dangers associated with unlawful telecom practices and to promote responsible usage.
PTA reiterated that avoiding foreign SIM cards is in the best interest of both individuals and the country. By using legally registered SIMs, citizens can safeguard their identity, protect their financial information, and stay clear of legal trouble while contributing to a safer digital environment in Pakistan.
