Lahore, March 16, 2026 – The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has made tax registration mandatory for food businesses seeking registration with the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) as part of broader tax reforms aimed at expanding the provincial tax base.
Under the new requirement, food sector businesses must first obtain registration with PRA before applying for licensing or registration with the Punjab Food Authority. The move is intended to ensure proper documentation of businesses and improve compliance with provincial tax laws.
Punjab government pushes tax reforms
The initiative comes under the directions of Maryam Nawaz, as the provincial government rolls out a comprehensive tax reform strategy to strengthen enforcement, enhance transparency, and increase revenue collection across Punjab.
A review meeting on tax reforms and enforcement measures was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Moazzam Iqbal Sipra.
During the meeting, officials reviewed progress on expanding the tax net and improving compliance among service sector businesses operating in the province.
Crackdown on unregistered service providers
Chairman PRA directed enforcement teams to intensify action against unregistered service providers operating across Punjab. The authority plans to accelerate its enforcement campaign to ensure that businesses operating in the services sector are properly registered and paying applicable taxes.
Officials also briefed the meeting on tax collection from government and semi-government institutions, along with other administrative matters related to enforcement and compliance.
Action against tax manipulation
The PRA chairman instructed officials to compile data on businesses that deduct taxes from consumers but manipulate their sales records despite large volumes of business.
He emphasized that the authority will strengthen internal mechanisms and improve the legal framework to ensure greater transparency in the provincial tax system.
Sipra also warned that business outlets involved in repeated violations or manipulation of sales records could be sealed under the law.
Officials attend enforcement review meeting
The meeting was attended by the Commissioner Enforcement Lahore, Member Legal, Member Support Services, and other senior officials of the Punjab Revenue Authority, who discussed strategies to further enhance tax compliance and enforcement across the province.
The latest measure is expected to help the government bring more businesses into the formal tax system while improving regulatory oversight of the food sector in Punjab.
