Punjab weather update: thundershowers, rain forecast for districts

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a detailed Punjab weather update, predicting thundershowers and rainfall in multiple districts over the next 24 hours.

Residents across the province are advised to stay alert, as unstable weather patterns are likely to persist through the weekend.

According to the Met Office, Punjab is expected to experience hot and dry weather in most areas on Sunday, May 25, 2025. However, rain-duststorms and thundershowers, accompanied by isolated heavy falls and possible hailstorms, are forecast at scattered locations. These include Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Jhelum, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, and Sheikhupura.

In southern and western parts of Punjab, including Bhakkar, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Layyah, partly cloudy skies with chances of duststorms and isolated rainfall are expected. For Saturday night, the weather in Punjab will likely remain unsettled, with widespread thundershowers and duststorms forecast across districts such as Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Khanewal, and Taunsa Sharif.

The PMD has issued a national warning highlighting the risk of wind, dust-thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms that may cause damage to vulnerable structures such as electric poles, solar panels, trees, and vehicles.

Synoptic Situation:

Moist currents are continuously entering the upper and central regions of Pakistan, including Punjab. A shallow westerly wave is also affecting the same areas, enhancing the likelihood of unstable weather.

Forecast by Region:

• Saturday: Mostly hot and dry conditions are expected throughout Pakistan. However, Punjab, along with Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, may experience isolated rain-duststorms or thundershowers. Upper and central Punjab may see isolated heavy rainfall and hail.

• Sunday: The overall weather in the country will remain hot and dry. Nonetheless, parts of Northeast Punjab, the Potohar region, Islamabad, Kashmir, and Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may receive scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Rainfall in the Past 24 Hours:

Several districts in Punjab received notable rainfall. Attock recorded 48mm, Rawalpindi 36mm (Shamsabad), Chaklala 20mm, and Murree 11mm. Other areas like Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, and Jhelum also experienced light to moderate showers.
