Pakistan fast bowler Razaullah hits nine sixes on Test debut to set England a target of 130 at Edgbaston.
EDGBASTON: Pakistan fast bowler Razaullah produced a remarkable counter-attacking innings on his Test debut, smashing 81 off just 63 balls to give his side a much-needed boost against England in the World Test Championship clash at Edgbaston.
The 21-year-old came to the crease at No. 9 with Pakistan on 312 for seven, needing only eight more runs to force England to bat again. Instead of retreating under pressure, Razaullah launched an extraordinary assault on England’s attack.
His innings included nine sixes, equalling the record for the most sixes by a debutant in a Test innings. His explosive contribution helped Pakistan set England a fourth-innings target of 130 runs after the hosts had threatened to take complete control of the match.
Razaullah takes on England’s pace attack
Razaullah showed particular confidence against the short ball, taking on England’s pace attack led by Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue.
“I was being selective with which balls to slog, but they all seemed within range,” Razaullah said after the conclusion of Day 3.
“I wanted to take it as deep as possible. I wasn’t scared of pace. I wanted to punish the balls from Archer that landed on a hard length.
“There’s nothing to be scared of when you’re playing for your country. I was just enjoying myself.”
The young paceman backed himself against an England attack that had repeatedly troubled Pakistan’s batters during the series.
England had already secured an unassailable 2-0 lead after winning the opening two Tests, leaving Pakistan needing a strong response to avoid a series whitewash.
Short ball proves key to attacking approach
Razaullah said his confidence against short deliveries was central to his approach at the crease.
“My favourite ball [to face] is the short ball. I just believed in myself. I thought if I played 50 balls, I’d get a positive result. And thankfully that happened.”
His fearless approach was matched by his enjoyment at the crease, with the Edgbaston crowd giving him a standing ovation in recognition of his fighting innings.
“I enjoyed the standing ovation,” he said. “I like to enjoy life and I was relishing the moment.”
England need 130 for series sweep
England will begin Day 4 with the bat, requiring 130 runs to complete a 3-0 series sweep over Pakistan in the three-match series.
Although Pakistan remain under pressure, Razaullah’s explosive debut has provided the visitors with a rare moment of inspiration after a difficult series.
His nine sixes have also placed his name alongside the most destructive debut performances in Test cricket, while his fearless display has given Pakistan renewed hope heading into the final stage of the match.
