Real Madrid will play the final of the 2024 Intercontinental Cup at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, the same venue that hosted the thrilling final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, tournament organizers announced on Tuesday. This marks another high-profile international event for Qatar, as the country continues to attract global sports competitions to its state-of-the-art facilities.
The tournament’s other matches will take place at Stadium 974, an innovative venue originally designed to be dismantled after the 2022 World Cup. Located near the Doha port, Stadium 974 is notable for being the first fully demountable stadium in World Cup history, constructed using sustainable materials, including repurposed shipping containers. While the original plan was to dismantle it post-tournament, the structure has been retained, allowing it to host major events such as the Intercontinental Cup.
In the Intercontinental Cup setup, Stadium 974 will host the clash between the champions of Concacaf and Conmebol, as well as the semifinal match. The semifinal will feature Al Ahly of Egypt, who advanced to this round after their victory over Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates in the second round, against the winner of the Concacaf-Conmebol showdown. Real Madrid, meanwhile, is already secured a place in the final, eagerly awaiting their next opponent.
Lusail Stadium, with a capacity of over 80,000 and modern facilities, is set to welcome fans from across the globe on the occasion of the second anniversary of the 2022 World Cup final. Hassan Al Kuwari, Executive Director of Commercial Affairs, Marketing, and Events for the organizing committee, expressed his excitement about hosting another prestigious tournament in Qatar. “We look forward to welcoming fans from around the world to experience that exciting atmosphere,” he said. “As always, fans will be able to enjoy the hospitality, the incredible cultural variety, and the infrastructure of Qatar for a unique experience.”
Qatar’s advanced infrastructure and commitment to hospitality have made it a sought-after venue for international tournaments, and the Intercontinental Cup final adds another marquee event to its portfolio. For Real Madrid, this provides an opportunity to clinch another title on a world stage, in a venue that recently hosted some of the most memorable moments in football history.
With Lusail and Stadium 974 ready to host fans and players alike, Qatar is set to deliver another unforgettable tournament experience, showcasing the region’s passion for football and capacity to host premier sporting events.
