Tesla is gearing up to launch a refreshed version of its highly popular Model Y SUV, codenamed “Juniper,” with production expected to commence in January 2025.

This updated model is anticipated to include significant design and technology upgrades, mirroring the recent enhancements introduced in the Model 3 Highland. These upgrades are likely to appeal to Tesla’s growing customer base, reinforcing its competitive edge in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

In addition to the refreshed 5-seater Model Y, Tesla is also planning to roll out a 6-seater variant, which is scheduled for production in the fourth quarter of 2025 at its Gigafactory in Shanghai.

This 6-seater version is expected to feature a seating layout similar to the Model X, with two rows of captain’s chairs complemented by a third-row bench.

This configuration aims to cater to families and larger groups, further broadening the Model Y’s appeal to diverse customer segments.

To meet the anticipated demand for these new variants, Tesla has reportedly instructed its suppliers to ramp up the production of key components.

The automaker is targeting a significant increase in Model Y production at its Shanghai facility, aiming for double-digit growth. This strategy underlines Tesla’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in the competitive Chinese EV market, where the Model Y has emerged as a dominant player.

The Model Y has been a major contributor to Tesla’s success in China, which remains one of the world’s largest EV markets. From January to November 2024, Tesla delivered over 418,000 Model Y SUVs in the country, accounting for a staggering 73% of its total sales in China during this period.

This performance underscores the Model Y’s strong appeal, outshining even the popular Model 3 sedan. While the Model 3 remains a significant part of Tesla’s lineup, the Model Y’s versatility and spacious design have made it the preferred choice for many consumers.

As Tesla prepares to roll out these updates, the company is poised to further strengthen its position in the global EV market. By combining innovative features, expanded seating options, and enhanced production capacity, Tesla aims to cater to the evolving needs of its customers while driving continued growth in key markets like China.
