Return filing deadline extension not under consideration: FBR

Income Tax Return FBR

Islamabad, September 20, 2025 – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) clarified on Saturday that an extension in the deadline for income tax return filing for Tax Year 2025 is not under consideration at present.

A senior officer of the FBR told PkRevenue that the statutory deadline for return filing remains September 30, 2025, and this date continues to be final. Under subsection 3 of Section 118 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, the due date for filing annual income tax returns for salaried individuals, business proprietors, Associations of Persons (AOPs), and companies following a special tax year is clearly defined as September 30.

The officer confirmed that while the FBR has received requests and representations from taxpayers and various associations regarding the deadline, any decision would only be made after careful review. However, as of now, the FBR has no plan to extend the filing date.

Meanwhile, taxpayers, consultants, and professional bodies have raised concerns about persistent issues with the IRIS online return filing system. Users have frequently reported sudden outages and technical glitches that obstruct timely compliance.

Recently, the Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA), Lahore Tax Bar Association (LTBA), and the International Lawyers Association (ILA) submitted letters to the FBR chairman, highlighting the seriousness of these technical challenges. They urged the authority to ensure a seamless filing experience for taxpayers to avoid unnecessary penalties and stress during the closing days of the deadline.
