River Plate began their Clausura campaign in the Argentine Primera Division with a commanding 3-1 win over Platense on Sunday, asserting themselves as early title contenders.

The action-packed clash at Estadio Monumental saw the home side dominate possession, tempo, and ultimately, the scoreboard.

Facundo Colidio opened the scoring with a stunning strike from 30 yards out, curling the ball into the top corner to leave Platense’s goalkeeper rooted. The early goal ignited the River fans and set the tone for a high-intensity performance.

Despite the early setback, Platense showed resilience. Midway through the first half, Ronaldo Martinez equalized with a powerful header, connecting with a pinpoint cross from Guido Mainero. The goal briefly silenced the Monumental and highlighted Platense’s ability to compete physically.

However, River Plate quickly regained control. Within minutes, they restored their lead through Maximiliano Salas, who finished off a slick move involving a series of one-touch passes through the heart of Platense’s defense. The goal underlined River’s trademark fluidity and tactical precision under coach Martín Demichelis.

The match’s turning point came in the 75th minute when Platense’s Marcos Portillo was sent off for a reckless foul on Gonzalo Montiel. Reduced to ten men, Platense struggled to contain River’s waves of attacks.

River capitalized in stoppage time when substitute Miguel Borja beat the offside trap to slot home a third, courtesy of a perfectly timed through ball from Gonzalo Martinez. The goal capped off an impressive all-round display and secured three valuable points.

In other Primera Division fixtures on Sunday, Boca Juniors were held to a 0-0 draw by Argentinos Juniors in a tightly contested Buenos Aires derby. While Argentinos enjoyed more possession, Boca’s solid backline ensured they walked away with a point.

Meanwhile, Newell’s Old Boys claimed a 2-1 away win against Independiente Rivadavia, Atletico Tucuman defeated San Martin 2-1 at home, and Independiente were held to a thrilling 2-2 draw by Sarmiento.

With River Plate setting the pace early in the Clausura, fans can expect an exciting and competitive season ahead in Argentine football.
