Rockstar Games has officially postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, shifting its highly anticipated launch from fall 2025 to May 26, 2026.
The announcement was made via Rockstar’s official website, citing the need for additional development time to meet the high expectations of fans.
In a public statement, Rockstar expressed regret over the delay, saying, “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected.
The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”
The developer emphasized that the extra time will help them “deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.” Rockstar remains committed to exceeding expectations, promising that the additional months will allow for the level of polish the franchise is known for.
The delay comes after the debut trailer of GTA VI was released in December 2023. The trailer confirmed a return to the iconic Vice City setting and introduced the series’ first female protagonist, Lucia. The game’s storyline is rumored to be inspired by Bonnie and Clyde-style themes.
Since the trailer dropped, Rockstar has released limited updates, leaving fans eager for new gameplay footage. However, more details could be revealed during the upcoming Take-Two Interactive financial results call scheduled for May 15, 2025.
Despite the delay, excitement for GTA VI remains sky-high. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V, continues to break records even 11 years post-launch, recently becoming the most-watched game on Twitch in 2024.
While Rockstar has yet to announce a second trailer or gameplay showcase, the confirmation of a new release date provides fans with a firm timeline after years of speculation.
