Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka powered her way into the US Open quarterfinals on Sunday, defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-4 in a commanding display of form.

The Belarusian star needed just 73 minutes to seal victory, winning an impressive 84 percent of her first-serve points. While Bucsa showed determination in the second set, Sabalenka maintained control to advance as the defending champion.

The 27-year-old will now face Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in what promises to be a high-stakes quarterfinal clash. Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, earned her spot by overcoming ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. For Sabalenka, this marks another step toward a potential repeat of last year’s title-winning run.

On the men’s side, 38-year-old Novak Djokovic displayed vintage dominance, dispatching Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. With this victory, Djokovic has now reached the quarterfinal stage of all four Grand Slams in 2025, reaffirming his status as one of tennis’s most consistent performers. Reflecting on his form, Djokovic said, “I’ve built my career on grinding and staying resilient, but I know when to step up and be aggressive. Tonight was one of those times.”

Other men’s singles results included second seed Carlos Alcaraz’s straight-set win over France’s Arthur Rinderknech and American Taylor Fritz delighting home fans with a decisive victory against Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, in doubles action, Zhang Shuai of China and Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Britain’s Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal in a tightly contested three-setter.
