World No. 1 women’s tennis player Aryna Sabalenka has officially pulled out of the upcoming China Open, tournament organizers confirmed on Tuesday.
The Belarusian star explained that the decision was made to protect her health after experiencing discomfort following her triumph at the U.S. Open.
In a statement shared with fans, Sabalenka expressed her disappointment: “Hi all – I am sad to announce my withdrawal from the China Open this year after sustaining a small injury after the US Open. I am going to focus on being 100% healthy for the rest of the year and I can’t wait to see my Chinese fans soon. I look forward to returning to Beijing next year and wish the tournament good luck.”
Sabalenka has enjoyed a remarkable season, reaching the finals of three Grand Slam tournaments – the Australian Open, the French Open, and most recently, the U.S. Open. Earlier this month, she captured her fourth Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, cementing her dominance at the top of the women’s game.
Her absence from the China Open is a major setback for fans and organizers, as Sabalenka has a strong following in Beijing and was expected to headline the event. The main draw of the 2025 China Open will take place from September 24 to October 5, featuring many of the world’s top-ranked players despite her withdrawal.
