Samsung Ends Software Support for Galaxy S20 Series

Samsung has officially ended software support for its Galaxy S20 series, marking the end of a five-year update cycle.

The Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra will no longer receive security or software updates going forward, as the models have now reached the end of their promised support window.

Launched in early 2020, the Galaxy S20 lineup received monthly security updates during its first four years. In the fifth year, Samsung shifted the devices to a quarterly update schedule, which has now also concluded.

While newer Galaxy flagships are receiving up to seven years of updates—eight years for enterprise models—this level of support wasn’t guaranteed for older devices like the S20 series.

It’s important to note that the Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition), which was released a few months after the original lineup, is still receiving quarterly updates.

However, its time is also limited, as Samsung is expected to drop support for that model within the next few months.

This development highlights how far Samsung has come in terms of software longevity. The company’s current flagship devices, such as those in the Galaxy S24 series, now benefit from extended update policies aimed at keeping users protected and up-to-date for significantly longer periods.

The trend toward longer software support windows is becoming more common across the smartphone industry. Competitors like Google and Apple have also extended update commitments for their flagship devices.

However, the question remains—how long is long enough? While tech enthusiasts may upgrade frequently, many users hold onto their devices for years, making extended support increasingly important.

As Samsung sunsets the Galaxy S20 lineup, it marks the close of a chapter for a series that helped set the stage for many of the features seen in today’s flagships. Users of these models may want to start considering an upgrade to continue receiving the latest security protections and features.
