Samsung is reportedly preparing a new foldable smartphone with an unusually wide display, aiming to directly compete with Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone.
According to a recent leak, the South Korean tech giant is developing a “wide” foldable device that could be unveiled in 2026, marking a notable shift in Samsung’s foldable design strategy.
The report claims that Samsung’s upcoming foldable will feature a 7.6-inch OLED inner display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This wider screen format is said to resemble the design approach expected for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which is rumored to arrive with a 7.58-inch inner display. The similar dimensions suggest that both companies may be targeting a tablet-like user experience when the device is fully unfolded.
Unlike Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Fold lineup, which uses a tall and narrow display, the rumored wide foldable is expected to adopt a passport-style folding design. This could make the device more practical for productivity tasks, media consumption, and multitasking, offering a more balanced screen ratio compared to existing foldables on the market.
In addition to the large inner screen, the device is said to feature a 5.4-inch cover display. While smaller than the cover screens found on some current foldables, the wider internal panel could compensate by providing a more comfortable layout once unfolded. The leak also suggests that the phone will support 25W wireless charging, keeping it in line with Samsung’s current charging standards.
Adding more weight to the rumor, a separate leak from last week revealed images of Samsung’s alleged wide foldable device. These images reportedly appeared as part of an internal Samsung survey focused on exploring future foldable form factors. The survey is believed to have showcased an unreleased foldable phone, hinting that Samsung is actively evaluating user interest in wider displays.
If the leak proves accurate, Samsung’s wide-screen foldable could represent a major evolution in foldable smartphone design. With Apple also rumored to be entering the foldable market, competition in this segment is expected to intensify. A wider foldable from Samsung could help the company stay ahead by offering users a more tablet-like experience in a compact, foldable form factor.
