Samsung to Launch Joint AI Research Center with SNU

Samsung Electronics announced on Monday its plans to establish a joint artificial intelligence (AI) research center in collaboration with Seoul National University (SNU).

This strategic initiative aims to advance AI technologies through collaborative efforts over the next three years.

The newly formed research center will focus on cutting-edge AI domains, including on-device AI and multi-modal AI. On-device AI refers to AI technologies that operate directly on devices, enhancing their functionality and performance without the need for cloud-based processing. Multi-modal AI, on the other hand, involves integrating and processing multiple types of data, such as text, images, and audio, to create more sophisticated and versatile AI systems.

Samsung has been at the forefront of integrating AI into its products. Earlier this year, the company unveiled its flagship Galaxy S24 smartphone, which features advanced AI capabilities like real-time interpretation. This move signifies Samsung’s commitment to embedding AI into a wide range of its products, enhancing user experiences and functionality.

The partnership with SNU is also part of Samsung’s broader strategy to nurture young AI talents. By engaging in joint projects with one of South Korea’s premier academic institutions, Samsung aims to cultivate a new generation of AI experts. This talent development initiative is expected to help Samsung secure core AI technologies, thereby bolstering its competitiveness in the fast-evolving AI landscape.

“We are excited to collaborate with Seoul National University on this important initiative,” said a Samsung spokesperson. “This partnership will not only advance our AI research capabilities but also play a crucial role in developing the next generation of AI professionals.”

The establishment of the joint AI research center underscores the importance of academic-industry collaborations in driving technological innovation. By leveraging SNU’s academic expertise and Samsung’s industry experience, the center aims to make significant contributions to the field of AI.

As the global AI race intensifies, such partnerships are vital for staying ahead. Samsung’s investment in AI research and talent development through this collaboration positions the company to remain a leader in the AI domain, ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
