Karachi, March 16, 2026 – Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished career that spanned nearly two decades. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter confirmed his decision on Sunday after representing Pakistan across all three formats of the game.
Sarfaraz made significant contributions to Pakistan cricket during his international career, playing 54 Test matches, 117 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 61 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Across these formats, he scored 6,164 runs, including six centuries and 35 half-centuries, showcasing his consistency with the bat.
Behind the stumps, Sarfaraz was equally impressive. The experienced wicketkeeper recorded 315 catches and 56 stumpings, making him one of Pakistan’s most reliable performers in the field.
Successful Captaincy and Historic Champions Trophy Win
Sarfaraz Ahmed also served as Pakistan’s captain in 100 international matches, including 50 ODIs, 37 T20Is, and 13 Tests. Under his leadership, Pakistan reached the No.1 ranking in T20I cricket, marking a successful period for the national side.
The highlight of Sarfaraz’s captaincy came during the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, when Pakistan secured their maiden title in the tournament. In the memorable final at The Oval, Pakistan defeated arch-rivals India national cricket team by a massive 180-run margin, one of the most historic victories in Pakistan’s cricket history.
Early Success in Under-19 Cricket
Before becoming a senior international player, Sarfaraz had already achieved success at the junior level. He captained Pakistan to victory in the 2006 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in Sri Lanka, where Pakistan defeated India by 38 runs in the final.
Sarfaraz Reflects on His Career
Reflecting on his cricket journey, Sarfaraz expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, fans and family members for supporting him throughout his career.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to represent Pakistan. From leading the U19 team to a world title in 2006 to lifting the Champions Trophy in 2017, every moment in Pakistan colours has been special,” he said.
Sarfaraz also highlighted his pride in leading the national team and helping develop future stars such as Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Hasan Ali during his captaincy tenure.
International Career Timeline
Sarfaraz Ahmed made his international debut in 2007 in an ODI against India national cricket team. His final appearance for Pakistan came in a Test match against Australia national cricket team at Perth Stadium in 2023.
