SBP announces bank holiday for Zakat deduction 2026

Karachi, February 17, 2026 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Tuesday announced that all banks will remain closed for public dealing on the first day of Ramadan 1447 A.H. for the purpose of Zakat deduction 2026.

In its official notification, the central bank stated that while banks, DFIs, and MFBs will be closed for public services on this day, all employees will attend offices as usual for internal operations. The holiday is observed to facilitate the deduction of Zakat from eligible accounts in compliance with the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, 1980.

For 2026, the Government of Pakistan has fixed the Nisab of Zakat at Rs503,529, representing the minimum balance required for compulsory deduction from savings, profit and loss sharing, and similar accounts. Accounts holding balances below this threshold on the first day of Ramadan will not be subject to deduction.

The first day of Ramadan, expected on February 19 or 20, 2026 depending on moon sighting, has been officially designated as the “Deduction Date” for Zakat. All Zakat Collecting and Controlling Agencies (ZCCAs) must ensure strict compliance, depositing collected funds into the Central Zakat Account No. CZ-08 at SBP immediately after deduction.

SBP has directed all commercial banks to implement the deductions according to the notified Nisab and deposit the amounts promptly, ensuring smooth execution of the nationwide Zakat collection process. This annual procedure supports Pakistan’s social welfare initiatives by channeling Zakat to eligible recipients efficiently.
