Karachi, July 1, 2025 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially announced bank holidays across the country in observance of Muharram 2025, marking the sacred days of Ashura.
In a notification issued on Tuesday, the SBP informed the presidents and chief executives of all banks, development finance institutions (DFIs), and microfinance banks (MFBs) that the central bank will remain closed on Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6, 2025, corresponding to the 9th and 10th of Muharram 1447 A.H. The SBP stated that these holidays are in line with the Government of Pakistan’s declaration to commemorate Ashura, a period of deep religious significance for Muslims around the world.
This annual closure allows financial institutions under the SBP’s jurisdiction to observe the holy days with reverence and tradition. The SBP emphasized that this decision aligns with the broader national schedule for Muharram and will ensure uniformity across the financial sector during these important dates.
Earlier in the day, the Sindh government also issued a similar directive, declaring public holidays on July 5 and 6. A notification by the Services, General Administration, and Coordination Department confirmed that all provincial government offices, semi-government bodies, autonomous organizations, and municipal institutions will observe these days off to mark Ashura.
The first ten days of Muharram, especially the 9th and 10th, hold immense spiritual significance as they commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala. Across Pakistan, religious gatherings, mourning processions, and majalis will be held to pay homage to their sacrifice.
The SBP has urged citizens and financial institutions to plan ahead for the upcoming bank closure and encouraged the public to extend full cooperation to law enforcement agencies deployed for Ashura processions. Ensuring peace and order during Muharram remains a shared responsibility.
As Muharram draws closer, the SBP continues to play its part in facilitating national observances, demonstrating respect for cultural and religious values while maintaining institutional efficiency.
