Karachi, May 23, 2025 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially announced that all banks across the country will remain closed on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in observance of Youm-e-Takbeer.
The SBP’s notification confirms the public holiday, aligning with the federal government’s declaration to commemorate this landmark day in Pakistan’s history.
In a statement issued on Friday, the SBP noted that May 28 marks the anniversary of Pakistan’s successful nuclear tests in 1998, which placed the country among the ranks of nuclear-armed states. This historic achievement is celebrated annually as Youm-e-Takbeer, symbolizing Pakistan’s commitment to national defense, sovereignty, and technological advancement.
The SBP emphasized that, due to the holiday, all bank branches will remain closed for in-person services. However, customers will still be able to access digital banking services such as online transactions, mobile banking apps, and ATM services. The SBP has encouraged consumers to complete any urgent financial tasks ahead of the scheduled holiday.
This SBP-declared holiday will also affect related financial institutions, with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) also suspending all trading operations on May 28. In a circular to stakeholders, the PSX cited the government’s directive and acknowledged the importance of Youm-e-Takbeer as a national symbol of strength and unity.
The SBP and PSX both highlighted the enduring national significance of Youm-e-Takbeer, especially in light of recent regional tensions. Reports suggest that the Pakistan Army has responded effectively to recent clashes with India, reinforcing the symbolic importance of this day as a testament to national resilience and deterrence.
The SBP reiterated that the holiday serves not just as a break in operations, but as a moment for Pakistanis to reflect on the country’s scientific progress, defense capabilities, and unwavering resolve in safeguarding its sovereignty.
With this announcement, the SBP has now issued five consecutive Youm-e-Takbeer holiday notices since 2021, reaffirming its commitment to honoring this critical milestone in the nation’s defense history.
