Scarlett Johansson has finally spoken out about rumors suggesting she’s set to star as the iconic villain Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled.

While attending the Newport Beach Film Festival, the 40-year-old Black Widow star was asked whether it’s “a real possibility” that she’ll take on the role of the cunning antagonist from the beloved 2010 animated classic.

“Is there a real possibility?” Johansson replied. “I think anything is possible. What would excite me about it would be the opportunity to work with Michael Gracey, who is attached to direct the film, because he is just absolutely an extraordinary visionary and any actor would love to have that collaboration with him.”

The live-action remake of Tangled is reportedly being developed by Disney, with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey set to helm the project. The film will bring a fresh take on the story inspired by the Brothers Grimm’s classic 19th-century fairy tale Rapunzel.

The story centers on Princess Rapunzel, kidnapped as a baby by Mother Gothel, who keeps her locked away in a secluded tower, claiming the outside world is too dangerous. With the help of charming thief Flynn Rider, Rapunzel escapes and embarks on a journey of self-discovery — ultimately reuniting with her real parents.

In the 2010 animated Tangled, Mandy Moore voiced Rapunzel, Zachary Levi played Flynn Rider, and Donna Murphy portrayed Gothel.

Disney’s Tangled live-action remake was first announced in December 2024, but production reportedly slowed following the disappointing box office results of Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.

While Johansson hasn’t confirmed her involvement, her remarks have reignited fan excitement about the highly anticipated adaptation — and the possibility of seeing the Oscar-nominated actress bring the sinister Mother Gothel to life.
