Selena Gomez says husband Benny Blanco offers advice on her music while allowing her to retain full control of her creative choices.
Selena Gomez has opened up about how her relationship with husband Benny Blanco has influenced her music, revealing that the producer has consistently encouraged her to make her own creative decisions.
In a new cover story for People magazine, the pop star said Blanco’s extensive experience as a music producer has been valuable, particularly when it comes to advice and guidance. However, she stressed that he has never attempted to take control of her artistic choices.
“He happens to be extremely more advanced in that world than I am, and I really appreciate his advice and his guidance, but he never took control of anything,” Gomez said.
The 34-year-old singer explained that she sometimes wished Blanco would take a more active role, but he instead encouraged her to trust her own judgement.
“If anything, I wanted him to and he just said, ‘No, I want your decisions to be your decisions,’ and it was very easy,” she added.
Gomez and Blanco put creative partnership to work
The couple’s approach to music was reflected in their 2025 collaborative album I Said I Love You First, released after they had been dating for two years.
The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and later earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Pop Recording.
Gomez described creating the project with Blanco as particularly meaningful, although she does not expect to make every future album with her husband.
“I don’t think I would make every album with him, but I loved it, and we have a memory now. We’ve done something together,” she said.
From industry friends to spouse partner
Gomez and Blanco first met through the music industry years before their romantic relationship began. Their professional connection included working together on the 2019 track I Can’t Get Enough.
Their musical partnership has continued, with the couple releasing another collaboration, Te Olvido (La La), with Becky G last month.
Gomez and Blanco married in September 2025 after two years of dating, marking another chapter in a relationship that began with a long-standing professional connection.
Their journey from industry acquaintances and collaborators to romantic partners and a married couple has also created a unique creative partnership, with Gomez making clear that Blanco’s role is to support her artistic vision rather than define it.
