Shailene Woodley urges patience in pet adoption

Hollywood actress Shailene Woodley has opened up about why a “grace period” is essential when adopting animals.

Speaking to PEOPLE magazine during Mars’ Global Adoption Weekend, the 33-year-old star emphasized the need for patience and understanding when pets transition to new homes.

Woodley explained that adopted animals often come from challenging backgrounds, and expecting them to immediately adjust to a new family can be unrealistic. “When you bring an animal home, don’t assume it’s going to be instantly harmonious,” she said. “Relationships take trust and patience, and it’s the same for both animals and humans.”

The Divergent actress compared adopting a pet to building any long-term relationship, where time, comfort, and trust are key. She stressed that just like humans, animals carry their own histories, and adjusting to a new environment requires gentle handling and compassion.

Woodley added that the so-called “grace period” allows space for bonding and trust-building. This patience, she said, lays the foundation for a healthier, lasting companionship. “The establishment of trust, being slow with the process, and giving space helps create a relationship that is productive and comforting for everyone involved,” Woodley noted.

Known for her advocacy in animal welfare, Woodley has long encouraged responsible adoption. Her message highlights that adopting a pet is not just about giving them a home, but about ensuring they feel safe, secure, and truly part of the family.
