Singer says breakup with Gerard Piqué was the “darkest moment” of her life but helped her become stronger

Shakira has opened up about the emotional struggles she faced following her separation from former football star Gerard Piqué, describing the breakup as one of the darkest periods of her life.

In an interview with The Times of London, the Grammy-winning singer said the end of her relationship deeply affected her because it also marked the breakdown of the family she had hoped to preserve.

“I saw the dissolution of my family, the family that I had dreamt to keep forever,” Shakira said.

The “Waka Waka” singer added that despite the pain, the experience ultimately made her stronger and wiser.

“I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person — or stronger, at least,” she said.

Shakira and Piqué were together from 2010 until 2022 and share two sons, Milan and Sasha.

Despite the difficult separation, the singer said she still feels grateful toward the former FC Barcelona defender for being the father of her children.

“I will always have that gratitude in my heart for the father of my kids and for turning me into the mother that I am today,” she said.

The 49-year-old singer also reflected on how hardship changed her perspective on life and relationships.

“They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and it is true,” Shakira said.

“Sometimes through hardships and through pain is how we discover how strong we can be. Suffering sometimes makes you a better person and makes you value friends and support.”

Shakira said she is currently focused on her children and career rather than pursuing a new relationship.

“There’s no space or time in my life for that,” she said. “My kids are my priority, and my career.”

The singer added that she is enjoying her independence and feels more connected to her work than ever before.

“Strangely enough, I’m in love with my career like I’ve never been in my life,” she said.

Following her split from Piqué, Shakira was briefly linked to Jimmy Butler and Lucien Laviscount.
