Shell Pakistan Introduces Innovative Plastic-Infused Road in Karachi

Karachi, July 3, 2023: Shell Pakistan has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainability by introducing a plastic-infused road in Karachi.

Through the recycling of discarded Shell lubricant bottles, the organization collaborated with start-up BRR Enterprises and the local authority, District Municipal Corporation South, to construct an environmentally friendly road that reduces plastic waste.

In a commendable initiative, over 2.5 tons of discarded Shell lubricant bottles were recycled to build a 730 feet long and 60 feet wide road, located in Karachi near Shell House. The bottles were incorporated into the construction of the asphalt road using the dry process method, effectively addressing the plastic waste issue. Plastics, being non-biodegradable and toxic, pose a threat to the environment. Research indicates that a simple plastic bag can take up to 500 years to decompose, while a plastic bottle can take around 300 years.

Plastic roads offer numerous advantages over conventional roads, including higher flexibility, durability, and a lifespan nearly three times longer. Moreover, the materials used in regular road construction are more expensive, whereas plastics are practically free, resulting in significantly reduced construction costs. This innovation is a sustainable alternative that addresses the social problem of plastic waste.

The Chief Executive and Managing Director of Shell Pakistan Limited, Waqar Siddiqui, inaugurated the newly constructed road in Karachi. He expressed his amazement at the result and emphasized the significance of this innovative approach in reducing plastic waste and providing an environmentally friendly option for future infrastructure projects in Pakistan. Siddiqui highlighted the importance of trying and testing innovative solutions like this, hoping they will be adopted to contribute to building a cleaner society.

Shell Pakistan has always been committed to providing energy in a responsible manner. The company aims to limit its impact on the environment and support the transition towards a lower-carbon future. Recognizing the importance of climate change and its role in ensuring a good quality of life, Shell Pakistan continues to explore innovative solutions that contribute to sustainable development and waste reduction.

The introduction of the plastic-infused road in Karachi by Shell Pakistan showcases the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and serves as an inspiration for other organizations to adopt similar initiatives. By embracing sustainable practices and innovative technologies, Pakistan can move closer to achieving its environmental goals while creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.
