Shipping Companies Must Open on Saturdays: Khurram Ijaz

Karachi, April 17, 2025 – Khurram Ijaz, former President of the Karachi Customs Agents Association and an expert in customs, logistics, and the supply chain, has strongly urged all shipping companies to ensure their offices remain open on Saturdays. This call aligns with the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has emphasized the need for improved trade facilitation and lower operational costs in Pakistan.

Ijaz stated that keeping shipping company offices operational six days a week plays a vital role in reducing the overall cost of doing business. By remaining accessible to traders on Saturdays, shipping companies can support smoother customs clearance, faster cargo processing, and reduced delays — all of which are crucial to economic growth and global competitiveness.

“I commend those shipping companies that are following the Prime Minister’s directive by staying open on Saturdays,” Ijaz said. “This initiative has brought tangible benefits, such as lower demurrage charges and container rental costs. It’s a big relief for importers and exporters who often face unnecessary losses due to weekend closures.”

However, Ijaz expressed serious concern over reports that some shipping companies have quietly resumed the practice of closing on Saturdays. He warned that this trend could sabotage efforts made by the government to improve trade logistics and might embolden other companies to follow suit, creating inconsistency and confusion in the system.

He emphasized that full compliance with the Prime Minister’s orders is essential for achieving transparency and efficiency across the shipping and trade sectors. “This is not just about following instructions — it’s about supporting the national economy,” he stressed.

Ijaz concluded his remarks by appealing to all shipping companies to demonstrate their commitment to the country by keeping their offices open on Saturdays. “It is a small step that makes a big difference. By cooperating, these companies can help build a more resilient and responsive trade environment that benefits all stakeholders.”
