New Delhi, October 4, 2025 – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Shubman Gill as India’s new captain for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, beginning October 19 in Perth.

The young opener takes charge in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who has stepped aside from leadership duties in the 50-over format.

This marks a significant milestone in the career of Shubman Gill, who has consistently proven himself as one of India’s most dependable batters across formats. Earlier this year, Shubman guided India to a 2-2 draw in the ICC World Test Championship series against England, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer with 754 runs at an impressive average of 75.40. His batting form and leadership skills have convinced selectors that he is the right choice to take India forward in ODIs.

While Gill captains the squad, senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to the team as specialist batters. Both veterans have been out of international cricket since March, following their participation in the ICC Champions Trophy. Having announced retirements from T20Is and Test cricket in the last 12 months, their focus is now solely on ODIs as they prepare for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

India’s ODI squad under Shubman Gill features a mix of experienced campaigners and promising youngsters, including Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, ensuring a balanced lineup for the high-profile series against Australia.
