Sindh declares May 1 public holiday for Labour Day

Sindh government

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh on Thursday officially announced May 1 (Friday) as a public holiday across the province in observance of International Labour Day, also known as May Day. The decision has been issued through a formal notification by the provincial authorities.

According to the notification, all government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, public sector corporations, and local government institutions operating under the administrative control of the Sindh government will remain closed on the holiday. However, departments providing essential services will continue to function to ensure uninterrupted public welfare and emergency response.

In addition to government departments, all educational institutions including schools, colleges, and universities across Sindh will also remain closed for the day. The holiday will allow students, teachers, and staff to observe Labour Day and participate in related activities or events.

International Labour Day is celebrated globally on May 1 each year to honour the contributions, rights, and struggles of workers and the labour force. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of fair wages, safe working conditions, and protection against exploitation.

Authorities emphasized that Labour Day holds significant importance in promoting awareness about workers’ rights and encouraging policies that support social and economic justice. Various labour organizations and trade unions across Pakistan, including Sindh, are expected to hold seminars, rallies, and public gatherings to highlight issues faced by workers.

The provincial government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding labour rights and improving working conditions across all sectors. Officials noted that continued reforms are being introduced to strengthen job security and enhance welfare programs for workers.
