Karachi, June 26, 2025 – The Sindh government has announced strict security measures ahead of Muharram, imposing Section 144 across the province from the 1st to the 10th of the Islamic month.
The decision comes as part of a comprehensive plan to maintain peace, prevent sectarian tension, and ensure public safety during the spiritually significant period.
A formal notification issued on Wednesday outlines the scope of restrictions under Section 144. All forms of public gatherings, rallies, and processions will require prior written approval from relevant authorities. The move is aimed at preventing any misuse of religious gatherings and to counter possible threats to law and order during Muharram in Sindh.
As part of the security protocol, the open display and carrying of weapons has been strictly prohibited. All weapon licenses and permits will be suspended for the duration of the restriction. In addition, the government has banned the use of drones, heli-cams, and any kind of aerial surveillance equipment during Muharram, citing security concerns and the risk of misuse.
The order also includes a specific ban on pillion riding across Sindh on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, dates historically marked by large religious processions. Law enforcement agencies believe this step will help deter miscreants and aid in crowd management during key observances.
The unauthorized use of loudspeakers, which has in the past been a source of provocation or disturbance, has also been restricted during this sensitive period. Authorities have directed religious leaders and community representatives to ensure compliance and promote communal harmony throughout Muharram.
Citizens have been urged to fully cooperate with the police and other security forces deployed throughout Sindh, particularly in cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur. The government has emphasized that these precautions are temporary and essential for the safe and peaceful commemoration of Muharram rituals.
With additional police, Rangers, and intelligence personnel on high alert, the Sindh administration is determined to ensure that the ten days of Muharram pass without any disruption or untoward incident.
