EV taxis, 1,000 electric buses, and new double-decker buses aim to modernize Sindh’s public transport network.
The Sindh Government has announced that it will launch its much-anticipated electric taxi service in September as part of a broader initiative to modernize public transportation and promote environmentally friendly mobility across the province.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the electric taxi project is on track for its September rollout, marking another major step in the provincial government’s strategy to introduce sustainable transport solutions.
The initiative is expected to provide commuters with cleaner, safer, and more reliable travel options while reducing carbon emissions in urban areas.
Alongside the launch of the EV taxi service, the Sindh Government plans to gradually expand its electric public transport fleet by adding 1,000 more electric buses.
The phased expansion is aimed at improving the availability of public transport, easing congestion, and encouraging the adoption of zero-emission vehicles throughout the province.
The minister also announced that Karachi will receive 50 new double-decker buses in October. These buses are expected to enhance the city’s public transport capacity while offering passengers modern travel facilities and improved comfort.
The addition of the new fleet reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade urban transportation infrastructure and accommodate the growing number of daily commuters.
In another significant development, a section of the Red Line corridor on University Road will be opened to mixed traffic in September.
According to the minister, allowing general traffic to use this portion of the route will help reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on one of Karachi’s busiest roads.
The move is expected to provide immediate relief to motorists while work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project continues.
Sharjeel Inam Memon reiterated that the Sindh Government remains committed to building a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible public transport system.
He emphasized that investments in electric vehicles, improved bus services, and transport infrastructure are intended to provide citizens with safe, reliable, and high-quality travel facilities.
The launch of electric taxis, expansion of the electric bus fleet, arrival of double-decker buses, and ongoing transport infrastructure improvements collectively represent a major step toward transforming public transportation in Sindh while supporting sustainable urban development and cleaner mobility.
