Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has secured the top spot at the domestic box office this week, crossing the $100 million mark and quickly closing in on the domestic totals of Venom: The Last Dance and A Quiet Place: Day One.
Despite slightly lower-than-expected weekend numbers, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remains the clear leader in the box office race.
Released on December 20, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 achieved a record-breaking $37 million during its second three-day weekend, marking a remarkable 38.4% drop from its debut. With a domestic total of $136.6 million, it is already less than $4 million shy of Venom: The Last Dance’s $139.72 million domestic haul and just under $3 million away from A Quiet Place: Day One’s $138.93 million.
The latest Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film has been a significant success, especially considering it is playing in 3761 theaters, a slightly smaller release than the previous installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
In comparison, Venom: The Last Dance, which is the third film in the Venom series and the fifth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, has grossed $476.4 million globally, with $139.72 million from domestic audiences and $336.68 million from international markets. Although it faced mixed reviews, it still became one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has also performed well overseas, earning $74 million internationally. Combined with its domestic earnings, its worldwide total now stands at $210.56 million. This positions the film to potentially surpass $215 million to $245 million in the U.S. alone, cementing its place as a major success for the franchise.
A fourth installment in the Sonic series is already in development, ensuring the blue blur’s continued dominance at the box office. Fans can expect more high-speed action in the years to come.
