Sony is working on bringing advanced artificial intelligence technology to its PlayStation consoles in collaboration with AMD. The company aims to introduce AI-powered frame generation, a feature designed to significantly improve gaming performance without the need for more powerful hardware.
In a recent interview, Mark Cerny, the lead system architect behind PlayStation’s hardware design, confirmed that Sony is partnering with AMD to develop this new technology. The feature is intended to increase frame rates in games by using artificial intelligence to generate additional frames between the ones rendered by the console.
This approach allows smoother gameplay while reducing the strain on hardware. Instead of relying entirely on stronger GPUs or processors, AI can predict and create intermediate frames, making motion appear more fluid and responsive during gameplay.
The collaboration between Sony and AMD is part of a broader initiative known as Project Amethyst. The project focuses on developing machine learning graphics technologies tailored specifically for PlayStation hardware. By optimizing the technology for Sony’s consoles, the companies hope to deliver better visual performance and efficiency for future PlayStation titles.
One of the key building blocks of this technology is AMD’s upcoming FSR Redstone suite. This new software package expands on AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology by adding several advanced capabilities. In addition to traditional image upscaling, the suite includes frame generation and ray reconstruction features designed to improve image quality and overall performance.
Interestingly, Sony already uses a related technology in its current consoles called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This feature shares some technical similarities with AMD’s upcoming AI-powered tools. As a result, the new system is not being developed entirely from scratch but rather as an evolution of existing technology already present in PlayStation hardware.
However, gamers should not expect the feature to arrive immediately. Mark Cerny clarified that AI-powered frame generation will not be introduced this year. While development is ongoing, the technology still requires further refinement before it can be implemented in consumer consoles.
Despite the longer timeline, the collaboration between Sony and AMD indicates that AI-driven graphics improvements will play a major role in the future of PlayStation gaming. If development progresses smoothly, players could see the first demonstrations of the feature sometime next year.
