Sony has officially launched its latest APS-C mirrorless camera, the “α6700,” introducing a groundbreaking combination of cutting-edge imaging capabilities found in the latest full-frame Alpha™ and Cinema Line cameras with the portability and lightweight design of the α6000 series. This remarkable release marks Sony’s most advanced APS-C mirrorless camera to date.
Featuring a 26.0 effective megapixel APS-C back-illuminated Exmor R® CMOS image sensor and powered by Sony’s advanced BIONZ XR® processing engine, the “α6700” delivers exceptional imaging performance while maintaining a compact and lightweight form factor.
The camera supports high-resolution 4K video recording up to 120fps, offers a wide latitude of 14+ stopsii for capturing details in challenging lighting conditions, and showcases the S-Cinetone™ picture profile inspired by Sony’s professional Cinema Line models, resulting in refined movie imagery with impressive representation of human skin tones.
In addition to the camera, Sony has also unveiled the “ECM-M1” shotgun microphone, which provides videographers and vloggers with high-quality sound capture and offers eight sound pickup modes, including stereo recording.
Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director Product Marketing, Imaging Solutions, Sony Europe, shared his thoughts on the release, stating, “With the release of the α6700, Sony continues its commitment to empower creators of all levels by providing them with state-of-the-art tools to enhance their creative endeavors. Our vision is ever-evolving, and Sony will continue to expand its APS-C lineup to cater to a diverse range of creators and support their image production activities.”
Unparalleled Precision with AI-driven Subject Recognition
The latest APS-C back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor, boasting approximately 26.0 effective megapixels, combined with the advanced BIONZ XR engine, enables outstanding imaging performance. The camera supports a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 32000 for both stills and movies, allowing for high-sensitivity, low-noise shooting. Enhanced color reproduction ensures the accurate capture of subjects like people and plants, while Creative Look features offer unique visual expressions.
Thanks to the inclusion of an AI processing unit inherited from the α7R V, the α6700 achieves highly accurate Real-Time Recognition AF (autofocus). In addition to recognizing humans and animals like the α6000 series, it now accurately identifies multiple subjects such as birds, insects, cars/trains, and airplanes, catering to diverse creative expressions. When paired with the newly launched FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS II iii lens, it provides a focal length range equivalent to 105mm to 300mm in 35mm full-frame, enabling high-quality shooting with the power of telephoto zoom. Furthermore, it remains compatible with a wide range of E-mount lenses.
Exceptional Video Performance with 4K120p Capability
Leveraging data equivalent to 6K, the α6700 delivers superior 4K video output, including support for high-frame-rate recording at 4K 120fps. It incorporates S-Log3 with a dynamic range of 14+ stopsii for excellent gradation. Additionally, with S-Cinetone technology derived from Sony’s Cinema Line development, the α6700 produces impressive skin tone depiction and subject highlighting. The camera’s AI-driven Auto-Framing iv function smoothly tracks subjects, eliminating the need for manual camera movement. Equipped with a Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe compatible with digital audio interfaces, the α6700, when used in conjunction with the ECM-M1 shotgun microphone, enables direct digital audio transmission, capturing high-quality, unaltered sound.
Unparalleled Mobility, Operability, and Connectivity in a Compact Design
Measuring approximately 12cm × 7cm × 8cm and weighing about 493g v, the α6700 boasts exceptional portability. It features a user-friendly, touch-operable vari-angle LCD monitor with a modern touch menu for effortless operation. Customizable front and switching dials are included for still images, movies, and S&Q modes. The camera is equipped with a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system with 5.0 stopsvi advantage for stills, ensuring stable footage with the addition of Active Modevii.
In terms of connectivity, the camera now supports the Creators’ Appviii for seamless uploading of videos and still images to cloud services. Sony also plans to release a new version of the “Camera Remote SDK” in July 2023, allowing remote operation and setting adjustments.
