Mackay, August 23, 2025 – Cricket fans are bracing for a thrilling conclusion as South Africa chase a clean sweep in their One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia.

The third and final ODI will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena on August 24, with both sides having contrasting stakes – South Africa seeking dominance, Australia fighting for pride.

While Australia edged the preceding T20I series 2-1, the ODIs have belonged entirely to South Africa, who lead the series 2-0 with one match to spare. Victory in Mackay would mark South Africa’s fifth successive bilateral ODI series triumph over Australia since 2016, underlining their sustained supremacy in the format.

First Two ODIs – How the Series Was Won

The opening game saw South Africa post 296/8, powered by Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, and Matthew Breetzke. Keshav Maharaj then delivered a match-winning spell of 5/33, dismantling Australia for a 98-run victory.

In the second ODI, Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs scored fluent half-centuries, taking South Africa to 277. Lungi Ngidi starred with 5/42, restricting Australia to 193 and securing an 84-run win to seal the series.

Team Form & Key Performers

South Africa’s batting unit looks solid, with Breetzke, Markram, and Stubbs providing depth and composure. Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi have given positive starts, while bowling has been their biggest strength – Maharaj’s spin brilliance, Ngidi’s variations, and Nandre Burger’s pace have consistently troubled Australia.

In contrast, Australia have struggled with top-order collapses. While Mitchell Marsh (88) and Josh Inglis (87) showed resistance in respective games, lack of support from Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey, and Cameron Green hurt their chances. Adam Zampa and Xavier Bartlett offered glimpses of control, but the attack lacked sustained impact.

What to Expect in Mackay?

The Great Barrier Reef Arena has produced balanced conditions, with runs on offer but also assistance for bowlers with bounce and turn. For Australia, batting partnerships and disciplined bowling will be crucial to avoid a series whitewash.

For South Africa, it is an opportunity to maintain winning momentum ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup and stamp authority with a historic 3-0 sweep.
