South Africa displayed a commanding performance with both bat and ball at their stronghold in Centurion, securing a convincing victory by an innings and 32 runs against India on Day 3.

This triumph marks South Africa’s entry into the win column of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25, propelling them to the top with a flawless 100 percent win percentage.

Taking a significant lead of 145 runs, South Africa’s versatile pace attack wreaked havoc on the pitch, leaving India no chance to bounce back. The Proteas’ dominance unfolded in a series of events:

South African pacers, in line with captain Temba Bavuma’s decision to bat first, dismantled the top three of India’s batting lineup within the opening hour.

Despite a setback with Bavuma’s injury, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer stabilized India with a 68-run stand. However, Proteas broke the partnership, leading to India at 121/6.

KL Rahul, with memories of a previous century at Centurion, rescued India with a crucial 43-run partnership with Shardul Thakur, concluding the day at 208/8 due to rain interruptions. Kagiso Rabada stood out with a five-for, recording figures of 5/44.

KL Rahul guided India past 200, reaching his century with style. India folded for 245, and the Proteas faced early setbacks. However, Dean Elgar and Tony de Zorzi steadied the ship with a 93-run partnership for the second wicket.

Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s quick strikes, Elgar, in his international cricket farewell, showcased a stunning century. South Africa finished the day with an 11-run lead and momentum.

Elgar and Marco Jansen’s 111-run partnership for the sixth wicket dashed India’s hopes. Although Elgar fell short of a double-century, Jansen’s 84 left India struggling.

With a formidable lead of 163, South African pacers proved formidable, dismissing India’s openers within six overs. Despite Shubman Gill’s efforts, Jansen cleaned him up before tea, and wickets continued to tumble post-break. Virat Kohli fought a lone battle, scoring 76 as India was bowled out for 131.

With this resounding win, the series heads to Cape Town for the final Test starting on 3 January in the new year. South Africa looks to maintain its dominance in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
