South Africa shattered a long-standing record with a display of sheer power-hitting in their first innings of the second Test against Bangladesh, launching an impressive 17 sixes as they declared on a commanding 575/6.

This explosive feat broke their own record of 15 sixes, previously set against the West Indies in 2010, and marks the third-highest number of sixes in a single innings in men’s Test cricket history.

New Zealand holds the top record, having smashed 22 sixes against Pakistan in 2014, while India recently hit 18 sixes against England earlier in 2024. South Africa’s tally of 17 sixes in Chattogram now places them in elite company, equaling Australia’s 2003 record of 17 sixes against Zimbabwe.

The star-studded innings was driven by blistering performances from Tony de Zorzi, David Bedingham, and Wiaan Mulder, who each struck four sixes. Tristan Stubbs added to the mayhem with three, while Senuran Muthusamy cleared the boundary twice. This memorable inning serves as a testament to South Africa’s aggressive approach and capability to dominate with power-hitting across formats.

This achievement comes hot on the heels of another six-hitting record set by South Africa just last year. During the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India, the Proteas smashed an unprecedented 99 sixes over the course of the tournament, showcasing their strength in the shortest format and reinforcing their identity as a dynamic and fearless side.

By amassing 575 runs and putting Bangladesh under immense pressure, South Africa positioned themselves firmly in control of the Test. To bolster their commanding score, Kagiso Rabada, recently crowned the No.1 Test bowler, delivered with the ball as well, taking two critical wickets before the close of play on day two. Bangladesh struggled at 38/4, teetering on the edge of collapse and facing a daunting task ahead.

With this emphatic performance, South Africa strengthens its bid for a place in the ICC World Test Championship Final next year. Currently sitting in fifth place, the Proteas have the chance to rise in the rankings with successful home series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, positioning themselves within reach of the top two and a potential spot in the prestigious championship final.

As they continue to rewrite records and assert dominance on the field, South Africa’s blend of aggressive batting and disciplined bowling makes them a formidable contender, eager to secure their place at the pinnacle of Test cricket.
