Spotify has officially begun rolling out its long-awaited HiFi lossless audio feature, giving Premium subscribers access to higher-quality sound.
The feature is now live in select regions, including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden. According to the company, Spotify HiFi will expand to more than 50 countries by October 2025.
The lossless audio feature was first announced back in 2021, but its launch was delayed after Apple Music disrupted the market by offering lossless and spatial audio at no extra cost. Unlike earlier assumptions that Spotify HiFi would be part of a higher-priced subscription tier, the company is making it available at the same price as the current Spotify Premium plans.
With the update, Premium users will see a new “Lossless” option in the audio quality settings. Spotify HiFi supports playback of up to 24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC files, a significant upgrade from the 320kbps Ogg Vorbis format previously offered. While this is a welcome improvement, competitors such as Apple Music and Tidal provide higher-resolution files at up to 24-bit/192kHz and also include spatial audio, which Spotify currently lacks.
Despite these limitations, the addition of lossless audio is still a big step forward for Spotify. Audiophiles and users with high-quality headphones or speakers will finally notice the difference in sound clarity. However, some industry watchers believe that Spotify may introduce high-resolution or spatial audio in a future, more expensive tier.
The timing of the rollout also coincides with Apple’s recent announcement of a library migration tool designed to attract users from rival streaming services. Just months ago, Spotify HiFi references were spotted within the desktop app’s code, hinting that the feature was nearing release.
Although not all Premium users will gain immediate access, Spotify expects the gradual rollout to be complete within a month. For listeners who have been waiting since 2021, the arrival of Spotify HiFi—even with a slight delay—marks an exciting development in the platform’s evolution.
