Spotify is testing a new “Skip ahead” button that could automatically bypass podcast advertisements.
Spotify is testing a new feature that could make it easier for Premium subscribers to skip advertisements embedded in podcasts.
Unlike music, where Spotify Premium removes platform-served ads, podcast creators can insert advertisements at different points in their episodes. The new feature could give listeners a simpler way to move past those adverts.
Spotify tests “Skip ahead” button for podcasts
According to Podnews, Spotify is experimenting with a new “Skip ahead” button that allows users to bypass podcast ads.
The pill-shaped button appears beside the Chapters button above the podcast title. While the feature reportedly takes a few seconds to respond at present, likely because it remains experimental, it can skip an entire advertisement and resume playback at the appropriate point.
Currently, listeners trying to move past podcast adverts can use Spotify’s standard 15-second skip button. However, that option can be inconvenient because advertisements vary in length.
The new Skip ahead feature could remove that guesswork by identifying the advertisement and taking listeners directly back to the podcast.
Feature currently limited to some users
The experimental feature appears to be available to some Spotify users in the US and UK. It could potentially expand to additional markets if Spotify decides to continue with the test.
A Spotify spokesperson told Podnews that the company is exploring ways to make podcast listening and viewing more intuitive for Premium subscribers based on how people use the platform.
The company added that its goal is to help listeners spend more time enjoying podcasts.
Spotify ad skipping could concern podcasters
While the feature could be welcomed by listeners, it may raise concerns among podcasters and advertisers.
Podcast advertising is an important source of income for many creators, particularly when brands pay for sponsorships and host-read promotions. A feature that allows listeners to bypass those adverts could potentially reduce the exposure advertisers receive.
Spotify has not confirmed that the Skip ahead feature will become a permanent part of its service. Like other experimental features, it could be changed, expanded or abandoned depending on the results of the test.
For now, the feature remains an experiment, but if Spotify eventually rolls it out widely, it could significantly change how Premium subscribers interact with advertisements in podcasts.
