Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed legendary fast bowler Lasith Malinga as a consultant fast bowling coach in preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The former captain’s appointment comes as part of Sri Lanka’s strategic build-up to the global tournament, which the island nation will co-host early next year.

In an official statement, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Malinga will serve in a short-term role from December 15, 2025, to January 25, 2026. During this period, he will work closely with the national squad to fine-tune bowling strategies and strengthen the fast bowling unit ahead of the marquee event.

Malinga, who famously led Sri Lanka to their T20 World Cup triumph in 2014 by defeating India in the final, brings vast international and leadership experience to the coaching setup. Renowned for his lethal yorkers and exceptional death bowling skills, the 42-year-old claimed 107 wickets in 84 T20 International matches during his illustrious career.

Since retiring from international cricket in 2021, Malinga has remained actively involved in the game, mentoring bowlers and coaching across various T20 franchise leagues worldwide. He also previously served as Sri Lanka’s bowling strategy coach in 2022, further enhancing his credentials as a tactical expert in the shortest format.

Sri Lanka will aim to capitalize on Malinga’s expertise as they prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which begins on February 7. Placed in Group B, Sri Lanka will compete alongside Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Oman. The former champions will open their campaign against Ireland on February 8 at the R. Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo.

In the lead-up to the tournament, Sri Lanka has already announced a preliminary squad and is scheduled to play home series against Pakistan and England to sharpen their preparations.
