Sri Lanka’s plans for the upcoming T20I series against India have been dealt a blow with the unavailability of their pace spearhead, Dushmantha Chameera.
The experienced right-arm fast bowler has been sidelined due to illness, specifically bronchitis and a respiratory infection, which has necessitated his withdrawal from the squad.
Chameera, who was initially included in Sri Lanka’s 16-member squad for the series, has been an integral part of their T20 setup. With 55 wickets in as many matches, his presence on the field has been pivotal for Sri Lanka in the shortest format of the game.
However, his recurring injuries and now this illness have posed challenges to his consistent availability, impacting the team’s bowling strength significantly.
In Chameera’s absence, Sri Lanka Cricket has called up Asitha Fernando as a replacement. Fernando, a regular in Sri Lanka’s Test squad, has limited experience in T20 internationals, having played only three matches in this format.
Despite his limited exposure, Fernando is expected to bring his own strengths to the team, aiming to fill the considerable void left by Chameera.
Chameera’s absence is not just a loss in terms of skill and experience, but also a blow to the morale of the team, as he was a part of the squad for the T20 World Cup, although he did not get a chance to play in any of the matches.
His ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs and his pace have always been assets for the Sri Lankan team, especially in high-stakes series like the one against India.
The series against India is set to be a significant one for Sri Lanka, as it marks the beginning of a new era in their cricketing journey. With Charith Asalanka taking over the captaincy from Wanindu Hasaranga, the team is looking at a fresh start.
Asalanka’s leadership will be under scrutiny as he takes charge for the first time in the three-match series, which kicks off on July 27 in Pallekele.
The Sri Lankan team will be eager to make a strong impression under Asalanka’s captaincy and will look to adapt quickly to the absence of Chameera.
The series presents an opportunity for other players to step up and make a mark on the international stage, showcasing their potential and helping Sri Lanka put up a competitive fight against a strong Indian side.
