Sri Lanka Penalized 10% of Match Fee for Slow Over-Rate

In the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup clash on October 07, 2023, Sri Lanka has incurred a 10 percent fine on their match fee due to a slow over-rate during their match against South Africa.

The penalty was imposed by Javagal Srinath, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. A press release revealed that Dasun Shanaka’s team fell short by 2 overs from the required over-rate, even after considering time allowances.

This action was taken in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses violations related to the minimum over-rate. For each over that their side fails to deliver within the stipulated time, players are fined 5 percent of their match fees.

Dasun Shanaka promptly admitted to the offense and accepted the proposed penalty, obviating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, third umpire Michael Gough, and fourth umpire Alex Wharf.

This news highlights the importance of maintaining a consistent over-rate during international cricket matches, ensuring the smooth flow of the game and adherence to the established regulations.
