SSGC increases gas outage timings in Karachi due to shortfall

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has taken the decision to increase the duration of gas outages for residents in Karachi, citing a significant shortfall faced by the utility, sources said on Wednesday.

This move comes as a response to the shortage of gas supply, impacting various segments of the population in the city.

The SSGC initially implemented a gas load management plan that spanned from 11 PM to 6 AM, aiming to effectively manage the gas distribution. However, due to the shortage, the company has extended the load management plan, leading to a suspension of gas supply between 2 PM and 5 PM daily. As a result, the residents of Karachi will experience approximately 10 hours without gas each day.

The shortage faced by the SSGC amounts to 200 MMCFD (Million Cubic Feet per Day) of gas, prompting the company to lengthen the gas shutdown timings. This shortage has posed challenges for various segments of the population, including housewives, hotel owners, food establishments, milk vendors, sweet makers, and confectioners, who heavily rely on gas for their daily operations.

The consequences of the gas shutdowns and reduced pressure from gas fields have been observed in the form of widespread complaints regarding low gas pressure in different areas of Karachi. Several locations, including Defence, Gizri, Landhi, Saudabad, Old City Area, Saddar, PECHS, Orangi, Gulshan-e-Maimar, Korangi, North Karachi, Malir, Model Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Nazimabad, Surjani, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Gadap, and Kathore, have experienced complete gas supply cutoffs.

The Sui Southern Gas Company’s decision to extend gas outage timings in Karachi due to a significant shortfall has resulted in substantial challenges for the city’s residents and businesses. The shortage of 200 MMCFD gas has led to increased gas shutdowns and complaints of low gas pressure across various areas. This situation highlights the pressing need for measures to address the gas supply issues and minimize the impact on the affected population and industries in Karachi.
