Starlink Pakistan Registration Process Underway: PTA

Pakistan Telecom Authority

Islamabad, March 4, 2025 – The registration process for Starlink, a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, is currently underway in Pakistan, according to an official statement from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Tuesday.

This marks a significant step toward improving digital connectivity across the country.

This progress follows a high-level meeting between PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeezur Rehman and the Starlink delegation at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, Spain. The primary agenda of the discussion was to explore ways to enhance affordable broadband access, particularly in underserved and remote regions of Pakistan, in an effort to bridge the digital divide and accelerate the nation’s digital transformation.

“The conversation centered on enhancing affordable broadband availability, especially in areas with limited connectivity, to address the digital gap and boost the overall digital transformation process,” the PTA statement noted.

During the meeting, the PTA chairman reiterated the authority’s commitment to fostering innovation and embracing emerging technologies that support nationwide digital accessibility. He further confirmed that Starlink’s registration is currently being processed with the country’s satellite regulatory body, a crucial requirement before PTA can officially grant a licence for satellite-based internet services.

Starlink, known for providing high-speed satellite internet to remote locations globally, presented its technological solutions and potential benefits for Pakistan’s underdeveloped regions. Both parties also discussed the regulatory frameworks required to ensure seamless integration of Starlink’s services within Pakistan’s telecom landscape.

Earlier this year, tech mogul Elon Musk announced that Starlink had formally applied to launch its services in Pakistan and was awaiting the necessary government approvals. The Standing Committee on Information Technology & Telecommunication has urged PTA to expedite the approval process to facilitate the rapid introduction of Starlink’s services in Pakistan.

Starlink first expressed interest in entering the Pakistani market in 2022, outlining its plans to deliver satellite-based internet connectivity. However, regulatory matters with the Pakistan Space Regulatory Authority remain under evaluation. Until a final agreement is reached, Starlink cannot officially commence operations in Pakistan.

The PTA continues to streamline the regulatory process, aiming to bring Starlink’s services to Pakistan and strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure. The introduction of Starlink is expected to revolutionize internet accessibility, particularly in rural and underserved areas, thereby contributing to Pakistan’s broader digital ambitions.
