Strong earthquake of magnitude 6 jolts Islamabad

Weather Forecast Thundershowers

Islamabad, September 1, 2025 – A strong earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale shook Islamabad and several surrounding regions today, sending waves of panic across the capital.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the tremors were recorded at a shallow depth of 15 kilometers in the Hindu Kush region, with the epicenter located in southeastern Afghanistan.

The earthquake was powerful enough to cause windows to rattle and furniture to shake in homes and offices across Islamabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Murree, and adjoining areas. Many residents rushed outdoors for safety as the tremors lasted several seconds. Fortunately, no major casualties or significant property damage have been reported so far, though officials continue to assess the situation.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks, which can occur within hours or even days after an initial earthquake. Rescue teams, emergency services, and local administration are on standby to respond quickly should any damage reports surface.

Islamabad, being near fault lines and the seismically active Hindu Kush region, has experienced several earthquakes in the past, making regular safety drills and preparedness essential for residents. Today’s quake serves as another reminder of the importance of structural safety and emergency planning in the capital.
