The highly anticipated animated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, has emerged as the biggest box office opener of 2026, delivering a massive debut worldwide. The film, a follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has exceeded expectations with impressive ticket sales and strong audience turnout.

Since its release on April 1, the movie has generated $190.1 million at the domestic box office in the United States, with global earnings projected to reach approximately $372.5 million. It also recorded the highest opening day of the year so far, earning $34.5 million across more than 3,800 theaters.

The film features the return of its star-studded voice cast, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black. New additions to the cast, such as Donald Glover and Brie Larson, have further boosted the film’s appeal.

Inspired by the hit video game Super Mario Galaxy, the movie builds on the global success of its predecessor, which earned over $1.3 billion worldwide. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to helm the sequel, working alongside writer Matthew Fogel and Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

The strong opening performance places the film ahead of other major 2026 releases like Project Hail Mary and Avatar: Fire and Ash, solidifying its position as the year’s biggest theatrical launch so far.

Currently playing in cinemas worldwide, the film is expected to continue its box office momentum in the coming weeks, driven by family audiences and long-time fans of the iconic franchise.
