Sweltering Heatwave to Grip Sindh Districts on May 9, 2024

Karachi, May 7, 2024 – Residents of Sindh are bracing for an exceptionally hot day this Thursday, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts searing temperatures across most districts of the province.

Particularly, upper and central regions are expected to experience intense heat, elevating concerns about health and safety amidst the summer’s peak.

The PMD’s latest weather advisory highlights that while most parts of Sindh will be hot and dry, districts such as Nawabshah, Mithi, Dadu, Mohenjo-Daro, Sukkur, and Hyderabad will endure particularly harsh conditions. In these areas, temperatures are expected to soar, making daily activities and outdoor work challenging.

Adding to the discomfort, dust raising and gusty winds are likely to occur during the afternoon, which could further worsen air quality and visibility, increasing the hardships faced by the local populations. This weather pattern is attributed to the prevailing continental air affecting the majority of the country, leading to dry and hotter than usual conditions.

Across Pakistan, similar conditions are forecasted, with the PMD predicting predominantly hot and dry weather nationwide on Thursday. The southern and central parts of the country will particularly feel the heat, continuing the trend observed over the past 24 hours.

The extreme temperatures recorded yesterday underscore the intensity of the current heatwave. Dadu and Mithi hit a scorching 47°C, while Jacobabad, Mohenjo-Daro, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Rohri, and Khairpur saw the mercury climb to 46°C. Other regions like Bhakkar, Chhor, Hyderabad, Khanpur, Padidan, and Rahimyar Khan were not far behind, recording highs of 45°C.

Health officials are urging the public to take precautions to mitigate the impact of the heat. Recommendations include staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing light, breathable clothing. Special attention is being called for the older people, children, and those with chronic health conditions, as they are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Local authorities are also gearing up to address potential power outages and water supply issues, which often accompany high demand during heatwaves. Emergency services are on alert to respond to any heatstroke cases and other heat-induced emergencies.

As the heatwave tightens its grip, the people of Sindh are advised to stay informed through regular updates from the PMD and local government advisories, ensuring they are prepared to face one of the hottest days of the year.
